Why Room Color Fill exists
Colouring a plan by department should take a minute. In practice it is the colour scheme dialog, which is its own small world - legend placement, scheme editing, values that appear in an order nobody chose, and a workflow you rediscover every time because you only do it twice a project.
How Room Color Fill works
Open the floor plan, area plan or reflected ceiling plan you want coloured and run the tool.
Pick the parameter to group by - name, department, occupancy, or any custom text, whole-number or decimal parameter your rooms carry.
The legend builds itself: each distinct value gets a colour and a room count, so you can see the grouping before applying it.
A counter shows how many rooms are unassigned, which is usually the interesting part.
Apply, and the colours go onto the view. Clear reverses it.

Colour schemes are set up through a dialog you use rarely enough to relearn each time.
After
You pick a parameter, look at the resulting groups and counts, and apply.
When to reach for it
- Departmental plans for a client presentation or a stacking study.
- Checking visually that every room has been assigned a department or occupancy.
- Spotting outliers - the one room whose value was typed differently from the other forty.
What it does not do
- It works in plan views - floor plans, area plans and reflected ceiling plans. It is not for sections or 3D views.
- Rooms must be placed with an area to be included, and the run is scoped to the active view's level.
- Colours are assigned per distinct value. Controlling exactly which colour a specific department gets is a colour scheme edit.
- The parameter list is sampled from the first five rooms it finds, so a parameter that only some rooms carry can be missing from the list entirely.
- If the view will not take a colour scheme directly - usually because a view template controls that setting - the scheme is written onto the template instead, which colours every view using that template.
- Clear is project-wide. It deletes every colour scheme this tool has created anywhere in the project, including ones applied to other views on earlier runs, not just the one in front of you.
Questions
- How do I colour rooms by department in Revit?
- Normally through a colour fill scheme, which is powerful but fiddly for a one-off. Here you pick the parameter, see the resulting groups and room counts, and apply the overrides to the view.
- How do I find rooms that have not been assigned a value?
- The counter at the top reports unassigned rooms directly - usually the most useful number on the screen, because those are the rooms about to be missing from a schedule.
- Can I remove the colours afterwards?
- Yes, but know what the button does. Clear removes every colour scheme this tool has created across the whole project - including schemes applied to other views on earlier runs - not only the one on the view you are looking at.
