Why Legend Placer exists
A legend belongs on twenty sheets, in the same place on each one. Revit will let you drag it onto a sheet, and then you do that nineteen more times, eyeballing the position each time, because a legend is the one view type Revit lets you place on more than one sheet and gives you no help positioning.
How Legend Placer works
Pick the legend view you want placed.
Choose how the position is determined - copy it from a sheet that already has the legend where you want it, or anchor it to a title-block corner with an X and Y offset in millimetres, 20 mm each by default.
Pick the sheets to place it on, from a searchable list with All and None controls. Sheets that already carry the legend are greyed out and counted, so a re-run is safe.
The legend is placed at a consistent position across all of them in one operation - one undo entry for the whole placement, and no entry at all if every sheet ends up skipped.
Before
The legend gets dragged onto each sheet by hand, and it is never in quite the same place twice.
After
You position it once and every sheet that has room for it matches, with the ones it could not fit named rather than overlapped.
When to reach for it
- Adding a materials or symbols legend across a whole plan set.
- Correcting a legend that was placed inconsistently across sheets already issued.
- Setting up a new sheet package that has to match an existing one.
What it does not do
- It places legend views. Other view types can only appear on one sheet, so they are not applicable.
- Overlap skipping is always on and cannot be turned off. If the legend's footprint would collide with a viewport already on a sheet, that sheet is skipped and the offending views are named in the result.
- Placeholder sheets are excluded from the list, and sheets with no title block fall back to A1 dimensions for the positioning maths - placement on those may not land where you expect.
- On a workshared model, sheets owned by other users are filtered out before the run starts. They do not appear in the skip list; the count is simply lower.
- It places the legend; it does not create or edit the legend content itself.
Questions
- Can a legend be placed on multiple sheets in Revit?
- Yes - legends are the exception among view types, which is why this is possible at all. What Revit does not give you is a way to place one consistently across many sheets at once, which is what this adds.
- How do I get the legend in the same position on every sheet?
- Point the tool at a sheet where the legend is already positioned correctly and it copies that position onto the rest. The position is captured as a percentage within the title-block outline, so sheets of a different size still land proportionally - and in that mode the viewport type is matched too, so the legend looks the same on every sheet.
