Why Rename Views exists
View names drift. A view gets duplicated for a study and becomes "Level 02 Copy 1". Someone renames half a set to a new standard and stops. Three months later the browser is a mix of two conventions and a lot of trailing whitespace, and renaming them by hand means clicking each one twice and typing carefully.
How Rename Views works
Every non-template, non-system view is listed for selection - schedules and legends included - laid out to mirror the Project Browser folder structure, with helpers to grab all of them, none, or just the ones with "Copy" in the name.
Rename by template using tokens - level, view type, sheet, a number, the original name - so "{Level} - {Type}" applies a convention across a whole set.
Or find and replace within names, with case sensitivity as a choice rather than an assumption.

Clean up the mess specifically: strip the trailing "Copy 1" that duplication leaves behind, and collapse runs of spaces.
Every proposed name sits next to the current one before anything happens, with a status on each row - ready, skipped, or an error saying why - and a strip counting views, rows shown, renames queued and errors. Apply asks for confirmation and writes the lot in one transaction, and the plan exports to CSV when a naming change needs signing off first.
Before
View names are corrected one at a time, so the convention is only ever half applied.
After
A naming standard is applied across a selection in one pass, and duplication artefacts are removed as a category rather than individually.
When to reach for it
- Applying a new office naming standard to an existing project.
- Cleaning up after a round of view duplication for design options.
- Bulk-prefixing a set of views for a particular package or discipline.
What it does not do
- It renames views, including schedules and legends. Sheets are excluded - they carry their own number and name, which is a different job.
- Templates and system views are excluded deliberately.
- Revit requires view names to be unique - a template that would produce a collision fails for that view rather than silently appending something.
- On a workshared model, views owned by other users are skipped without a message. If everything in the selection is locked, the result reads zero renamed and zero failed, which is worth reading as ownership rather than a bug.
Questions
- How do I remove "Copy 1" from Revit view names in bulk?
- There is a cleanup action for exactly that pattern, because it is the single most common naming mess and it comes from Revit's own duplicate behaviour. It strips the trailing copy marker without touching the rest of the name. It matches the English word "Copy", so a German "Kopie 1" is not picked up.
- Can I rename views based on their level and type?
- Yes - that is what the token template is for. "{Level} - {Type}" resolves per view, so a whole set gets a consistent name derived from what each view actually is.
- Is find and replace case sensitive?
- Your choice. It is off by default, so a search matches regardless of case unless you ask otherwise.
