Why Overridden Dimensions exists
A dimension that reads 3000 when the wall is actually 2985 is the worst kind of drawing error, because it looks correct. Someone overrode the text to make a string tidy, or froze a value during a design change, and it shipped. Revit will not tell you where those are. You would have to click every dimension in the project and check whether its displayed value still matches its measured one.
How Overridden Dimensions works
Run Override Dims and it scans every dimension in the project, including individual segments of multi-segment strings.
Each override is classified into one of four tiers: falsified, where the text contradicts the model; frozen, where someone typed a number that happens to agree with the measurement today; and two annotated tiers, one for text set above or below the string and one for prefixes and suffixes wrapped around a real value.
The results table shows the element, the severity, what the dimension displays, what the model actually measures, and which view it lives in - falsified first, then frozen, then annotated.
Selecting a row opens a detail panel; it does not move your view. From there you can select the dimension in Revit and the tool asks you to close the dialog and press ZS to zoom, rather than driving the view from a modal window. You can also select every override at once to review them as a set.
Fix it from the same panel: edit the override text and apply it, or remove the override so the dimension goes back to reporting the measurement. Each action is its own named transaction and its own Ctrl+Z, and the table rescans afterwards.
Export the list to CSV when it needs to go into an issue log rather than be fixed immediately.

When to reach for it
- A pre-issue check on any set where dimensions are contractual.
- Auditing a model you inherited, where you have no idea what previous authors overrode.
- Settling an argument about whether a drawing discrepancy came from the model or the annotation.
What it does not do
- It finds, classifies and can clear overrides. Deciding whether an override is legitimate is still a judgement call - plenty of annotated dimensions are entirely correct.
- Frozen and annotated overrides are flagged whether or not the displayed value currently agrees with the measurement. That is deliberate: a frozen value is right until the model moves, and nothing in the file records when that will happen.
- The visible table is capped at five hundred rows; the counts and the CSV export cover everything.
- On a workshared model, a dimension checked out by another user cannot be edited or cleared. The attempt is refused with a message rather than skipped quietly.
- It reads the open document. Dimensions inside a linked model are not scanned.
Questions
- How do I find overridden dimensions in Revit?
- There is no built-in report. Revit lets you override dimension text freely and gives you no way to list where it has been done, which is why an override can survive to issue. This scans every dimension and every segment and reports the ones whose displayed value no longer matches the measurement.
- What is the difference between falsified and annotated?
- A falsified dimension displays a value that contradicts what the model measures - that is the dangerous one, and it sorts to the top. A frozen one carries a typed value that agrees with the measurement today and will stop agreeing the moment the model moves. The two annotated tiers keep the real measurement and add to it, either as text above or below the string or as a prefix or suffix, and those are usually legitimate.
- Does it fix the overrides?
- Yes. Select a row and you can either edit the override text or remove the override outright, which puts the dimension back to reporting what the model measures. Each action is its own transaction and its own undo entry, and the scan refreshes afterwards so the table stays honest.
