Why Point Cloud Colors exists
Two scans in one view are indistinguishable. The survey of the existing building and the scan of the neighbouring structure render in the same washed-out point colour, so telling which points belong to which cloud means turning one off and back on again - repeatedly, for the whole time you are working.
How Point Cloud Colors works
Open the view containing the point clouds and run PC Color.
Pick a colour from the palette, or set your own by hex, RGB or the colour picker, with a live preview of the result.
Choose whether to colour every cloud in the view or only the ones you have selected.
Apply. Reset returns them to their original appearance.
Before
Multiple scans in one view are told apart by toggling visibility on and off.
After
Each cloud has its own colour, so which points came from which scan is obvious at a glance.
When to reach for it
- Federated survey data where several scans overlap.
- Distinguishing an existing-building scan from a site or neighbour scan.
- Making a scan read clearly against the model in a coordination view.
What it does not do
- It sets a fixed colour per cloud in the view. It does not colour points by height, intensity or deviation - nothing in the suite recolours individual points. PC Heatmap colours the walls instead, by how well they agree with the scan.
- It works on the active view and needs at least one point cloud in it.
- The colour is an instance-level display setting, not a change to the scan data.
- On some Revit builds the colour API behaves differently. If the override cannot be bound the cloud falls back to a flat default rather than your colour, and the log says so.
- Custom colours are not remembered between sessions - the palette is, your hex value is not.
Questions
- Can you change the colour of a point cloud in Revit?
- Yes, and this makes it a two-click operation with a live preview, including setting an exact hex or RGB value rather than choosing from a fixed list.
- Can I colour only one of several clouds?
- Yes. Scope is either every cloud in the view or just the ones you have selected, and the selected option is pre-chosen if you already had a selection.
- Does it change the scan file?
- No. It is a display override on the point cloud instance in the view.
